What Is a Wet Belt?
A wet belt runs inside the engine, submerged in oil rather than dry in a protective cover. This design is used in certain Ford EcoBoost and TDCi engines, and PSA (Peugeot/Citroën) 1.6 diesel engines, among others. Because the belt runs in oil, it has different service requirements and requires specialist knowledge to replace correctly.

CHARACTERISTICS
What Makes Wet Belts Different
- Belt runs in engine oil — oil quality directly affects belt life
- Replacement intervals are often shorter than a standard cambelt
- Failure is typically sudden and causes catastrophic engine damage
- Specialist tooling required for each engine type
- Oil condition at time of replacement is critical
COMMON VEHICLES
Vehicles With Wet Belt Systems
- Ford Focus, Fiesta, C-Max with 1.0 EcoBoost and 1.6 TDCi engines
- Ford Transit Connect, Tourneo with 1.6 TDCi
- Peugeot 208, 308, 3008 with 1.6 HDi (DV6) engine
- Citroën C3, C4, Picasso with 1.6 HDi
- Volvo and other vehicles sharing PSA diesel engines
- If unsure whether your vehicle has a wet belt, contact us — we'll check
THE RISK
Why Delays Are Dangerous
- Wet belts can fail with absolutely no warning
- A snapped wet belt causes immediate engine damage — bent valves, damaged pistons
- Engine replacement or rebuild typically costs £2,000–£5,000+
- Replacement cost of the belt is a fraction of the damage it prevents
- Always replace at or before the manufacturer-specified interval
Frequently Asked Questions
Contact us with your registration and we'll check. Ford EcoBoost 1.0 and 1.6 TDCi engines, and PSA 1.6 HDi diesels, are among the most common vehicles affected.
Typically every 50,000–60,000 miles or 5–6 years, but it varies by engine. Check your handbook or contact us to confirm the correct interval for your vehicle.
It can be slightly more labour-intensive due to the need to drain oil, replace seals and ensure cleanliness inside the engine. We'll give you a clear, fixed price before we start.
No — the correct oil specification is critical for wet belt life. We use the manufacturer-approved oil and advise you on what to use at future oil changes.
